Individual Hydrotherapy Sessions
All clients are screened to ensure they are safe to exercise in a hydrotherapy pool.
We will assess you on land and in the water then guide you through a series of appropriate exercises. We remain in the water with our clients at all times. A tailored program will be developed for each person and updated and reviewed as necessary. We encourage our clients to attend a pool independently and spend the time needed to ensure each person is confident and safe to do this.
Toni is available to do home-visits for land or water-based therapy.
Things to be mindful of
Make sure you bring a bottle of water to the pool and drink whilst exercising to avoid becoming dehydrated. This is very common and can cause a headache and blood pressure changes.
If you have low blood pressure, take care on exiting the pool, as your blood pressure tends to drop when exercising in a warm pool, particularly if you have spent a lot of time in the deeper end and it is a very warm day.
If you suffer from asthma or angina (chest pain), make sure you bring your ventolin or anginine medication with you and keep it poolside.
If you are normally short of breath with light exercise, take care as you move into deeper water as the pressure of the water on your chest can make it a little harder to breathe. Start in shallower water and carefully move into deeper water as your breathing allows.
If you are a diabetic, it is important you eat an hour or so before getting into the pool and bring some fast acting carbohydrates with you (eg. boiled sweets) in case your blood sugar level drops. (It is well known that blood sugar levels can drop significantly when exercising in water.) If possible, check your blood sugar levels before and after your exercise session. Wear protective footwear if you have reduced sensation in your feet. A medical check prior to commencing hydrotherapy exercise is recommended.
If you have any open sores/wounds, these MUST be completely covered by a waterproof dressing that should be applied to dry skin at least 15min prior to getting into the pool.
